From One Earth

Wisma Kebudayaan SGM,
No.243, Jalan Bukit Bintang,
Kuala Lumpur
11am-6pm daily

Art exhibition From One Earth features 12 Malaysian artists who express the beauty of the earth in their unique and poetic paintings. The exhibition ends on Sunday.

The artists are Ahmad Fauzi Arshad, Adeputra, Gary Quah, Mohamad Radzi Ismail, Shahril Awang, Shireen Lee, Rasid Yusof, Zaim Durulaman, Zulhairy Ithnain, Rosdan Abdul Manan, Mohamad Hanif Hassan and Rafie Abdul Rahman. They will deliver their own interpretations in the medium of their choice (paintings, sculpture and photography).

The exhibition is held in conjunction with Earth Day (on March 21). The artists’ works show the precious value of the Earth’s limited treasures. They hope to carry a message about sharing a common responsibility to preserve its well-being for future generations.

For example, Fauzi’s colourful painting of a coconut tree brings out the vibrancy and life of such a simple but taken-for-granted work of Mother Nature.

Quah’s picture of perfectly synchronised fishes show the natural harmonisation and livelihood of all living things.

Zaim’s abstract of shadowy trees and barks represent a melancholic yet calming sense of peace.

NN Gallery proudly presents the Malaysian Watercolour Organisation’s Annual Exhibition 2006 from Wednesday until April 7.

This exhibition by the Malaysian Watercolour Organisation (MWO) promises to be an exciting one. Thirty-nine members will showcase more than 100 pieces of recent watercolour paintings.

The watercolourists include Dr Wong Seng Tong, Abdul Ghani Ahmad, Aminah Abdul Rahman, Chia Seng Chai, Sharifah Zuriah Aljeffri, Yeoh Kian Thai, Charles Mawan, Alex Ong Boon Hau and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Samsudin Osman, who is also MWO’s patron.

Their works will highlight some interesting facets of Malaysian life. Buildings, rural life, street scenes, objects, landscapes, flora and fauna will be shown, the outcome of many painting excursions initiated by MWO members. They include Warisan Terakhir by Md Sani Md Dom and Kampung Kepayang by Mansor Ghazalli.

The two works epitomise the romantic, idyllic and simple rural setting of Malay kampungs. Koo Chiang Jin’s Clan Jetties, Penang shows a more urbanised version of wooden quarters, where television antennas and telephone lines are the order of the day.

Harvest Season # 3, a work by Yeoh Eng Peng, is a detailed study of the harvest season, with the wheelbarrow representing abundance and mobility.

Zuzila Zain’s Sunshine presents a view of the kampung in bright colours and strong lines.

POST-WAR GERMAN ARTWORKS
National Art Gallery
Kuala Lumpur
Till 28 May

CATCH "Gouaches", an exhibition of post-war German artworks by one of Germany’s best-known artists, Sigmar Polke, at the National Art Gallery from now till May 28.

Born in 1941, Polke began his career as an apprentice in a stained glass factory before he entered the Dusseldorf Kunstakademie (Art School) at the age of 20.

Upon graduation in 1968, he published a portfolio of 14 photographs taken with a borrowed camera of his tabletop sculptures and performances. He also experimented with chemical developers and fixers.

Polke travelled the world — Paris, New York, Afghanistan, and Brazil — throughout the ’70s. He finally settled in Cologne, where he has been living and working since.

The exhibition comprises 40 gouaches with a format of 70x100 cm, all dating back to 1996. These exhibits are the core of Polke’s "Music from an Unknown Source" exhibition, which give an insight into an artistic movement which ranks among the most significant of the German post-war era.

Polke often takes a distant position of irony, which enables him to turn his attention — above and beyond issues of content — to the form and the material nature of painting.

The gouaches of this exhibition have a "dripping and flowing" theme, which is used to illustrate the uncontrolled happening of physical phenomena as opposed to the controlled form.

The exhibition is jointly presented by the National Art Gallery and the German embassy in conjunction with German Cultural Month 2006.

Visit the National Art Gallery at Jalan Temerloh, off Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. Viewing hours: 10am-6pm daily. Free admission.
